I’m very pleased to announce that Metavid has been awarded a grant by Sunlight Foundation. This grant will fund full-time development on this project for a year in addition to expansion of hardware infrastructure. We’re very excited about what this means for the project: more stability, new features and better accessibility.
We’re happy to continue our cooperation with Sunlight, whose mission is, “to use the transformative power of the Internet and new information technology to enable citizens to learn more about what Congress and their elected representatives are doing, and thus help reduce corruption, ensure greater transparence and accountability by government, and foster public trust in the vital institutions of democracy.”
Watch this space for announcements of what we are (and will soon be) implementing.
Update: Also see UCSC coverage of the announcement

Aphid & I (dale) will be hosting a free culture/free skool class. It will take place Nov 7th, 14th & 21st 6:30-8pm UCSC Porter Room D245. Anyone interested in free and open source media should come check it out. Here is the description that will go out with the freeskool prints, which should be going out soon.
We will examine free and open source software for purpose of democratizing the production of audio/video media. We share how to work with free and open content repositories such as archive.org & metavid. We look at methods of subverting proprietary content sources, for critical use. We will look at free and open source systems for video editing and discuss methods for online collaborative media production. And finally look at systems of online distribution. Participants are encouraged to bring their laptops if they have them.
Update: Here is an outline of Open Media as discussed in the first meeting.

We have been working on getting more content in the archive and easily accessible. We recently acquired a new 2U dual core Xeon transcoding server with the resources from the sunlight min-grant…. This new computer should make transcoding around 3x faster. This should enable quicker posting of archival content. Also we are still looking for a way to put this capture box in the capital. This will enable live and instantly archived streams of house and senate proceedings.
Work on metavid continues to support not only viewing these proccedings but enabling their reuse in digital dialog.
Development is moving forward even without a full time developer
To review the new features mentioned in the metavid svn over the past two weeks:
- unified metadata table for search queries and results. (queries now run 2-3 times faster with fewer JOINS)
- people links, profile pages,
- advanced search functions in the web view
- updated playhead for ogg media (a vlc limitation makes it not work for annodex hopefully will be resolved)
- updated context playhead. (will explain more shortly)
- updated ivtv drivers for capture box
- updated archive maintenance scripts
These Features and more should be showing up in the bleeding edge section after they are fully tested and integrated by mid-late September.

The Sunlight Foundation has given metavid a small grant to continue development on the metavid project. The funds will be used to support software development and buy computer hardware for a new capture system capable of real-time broadcast and archival.
About the Sunlight Foundation:
