Mac OS X
- Hyperengine-AV -- used to be 'free but not open', recently open sourced!
- Theora For Quicktime (lets you use final cut pro, imovie etc
- FFMPEGx GUI for ffmpeg, mencoder and a few other command line apps.
Windows
- Directshow Filters should let you load clips into windows editors that use direct show (support avis)
- run cinelerra in windows can be done at non-native speeds using the free (as in beer) vmware virtual machine player.
Video Codecs & Containers
Open Source / Patent-free
- ogg (container)
- theora (codec)
Open Source / Patented (gray)
ffmpeg along with a few other open source packages support encoding into pretty much any commercial patented codec or container.
- ffmpeg can encode flv for example
- xvid (codec) xvid generaly found in MS avi container
- mpeg2 (codec/container) Patented by the mpeg group.
Closed Source / Patented
There are also commercial encoders and formats but they are not of much interest especially when open source implementations exist for pretty much every format.
