  • theora (codec)

Open Source / Patented (gray)

ffmpeg along with a few other open source packages support encoding into pretty much any commercial patented codec or container.

  • ffmpeg can encode flv for example
  • xvid (codec) xvid generaly found in MS avi container
  • mpeg2 (codec/container) Patented by the mpeg group.

Closed Source / Patented

There are also commercial encoders and formats but they are not of much interest especially when open source implementations exist for pretty much every format.
