Tom Harkin

12:12:23 to 12:12:44( Edit History Discussion )

Tom Harkin: there is not a sufficient second at this time. a senator: mr. president? the presiding officer: the senator from iowa. mr. harkin: mr. president, this amendment is not about protecting jobs because the bill already does that. we carve o nonprofit lenders to service loans.

Tom Harkin

12:12:45 to 12:13:05( Edit History Discussion )

Tom Harkin: we provided $50 million in bill to incentivize companies, private companies, too, to keep jobs in the same towns and cities where they are now. private lenders will continue to service outstanding private loan volume. now, let me say this also about sallie mae. they took a couple thousand jobs out of this country.

Tom Harkin

12:13:06 to 12:13:26( Edit History Discussion )

Tom Harkin: guess what? they're bringing them back because they get to service the loans, and under treasury rules, in order for them to service the loans, it has to be done in this country so sallie mae is bringing jobs back to america. so this amendment is not about protecting jobs. it's about killing the bill and leaving the subsidies to the big banks where they are today.

Tom Harkin

12:13:27 to 12:13:45( Edit History Discussion )
